Daventry Eagles vs Rugby Thornfield Junior Friendly match

Saturday 12th January 2019 saw the Daventry Eagles Junior bowlers travel to play Rugby Thornfield Junior’s. We saw a great turn out from both sides, with a total of 7 bowlers representing each club.

Rugby Thornfield made us feel very welcome, and it was clear to see early on that alot of their junior bowlers were of a very good standard. The matches kicked off at 10am, and comprised of pairs on rink 6, triples on rink 7 and pairs on rink 8. All the teams were very well balanced, and a great time was had by all.

Daventry Eagles Junior Singles Bowls Competition
  1. On Saturday 6th October, Daventry Eagles staged its very first Junior Singles Competition in over a decade. Ten under 13s took part in the 2-hour event. You could not have wished for, or orchestrated, a more dramatic outcome. Abbie and Tyler kept everybody in suspense drawing in the final and forcing a tiebreak, a one-bowl shoot-out.

The competition began with four qualifying rounds which where fiercely competitive with the measure being called for on several ends. This resulted in the demise of Maisie, Harry, Jasmine, Issie, Mia, and Lily-Ella, who lost narrowly with only 5 points separating them from the top four. Lucy and Jaiden continued to put up strong performances but eventually succumbed to the leading pair.  Jaiden finishing 3rd and Lucy 4th.

Oh yes, who won? Tyler confidently took to the mat for the first bowl of the shoot-out but clearly his arm was tightening. Nevertheless, a cracking delivery came to rest jack high within 1 yard and he looked a sure winner. Abbie nervously approached the mat. She steeled herself to calm her nerves in an attempt to keep a usually excellent technique under control. The result was outstanding, the bowl finishing jack high within 18ins. The crowd burst into spontaneous applause to congratulate both players.

A presentation rounded up the event. Our Chairman, John Sach, and President, Sue Pernyes presented a cup to the winner, a medal to the second, and certificates of merit to all who took part.

It was a day that we plan to repeat many times in the future. Everybody enjoy themselves competing earnestly in a sporting fashion.

The Junior Section membership, 8 – 18 years of age, is rising quickly and stands at 19. They meet on most Saturdays 11.30 – 13-30. Come and joins us. Bowls and shoes are provided. To be sure, please ring 01327 871971 to check the meeting is on that day.
